Christina Athinodorou (born April 24, 1981 in Paphos) is a composer with a profound and highly personal language. Described as « atmospheric, strangely fascinating » and « captivating » by the international press, her music is marked by a strong preoccupation with rhythm and the harmony of movement, while incorporating a range of influences, including contemporary approaches to timbre, extended techniques and selective elements of Mediterranean and Greek heritage, including drama, prosody and microtonality.

His catalog includes over sixty compositions to date, ranging from solo to orchestral, for vocal, instrumental and electronic forces, opera and music for the stage, as well as interdisciplinary projects.

Athinodorou’s music has been presented at prestigious festivals such as the Venice Biennale, Grafenegg, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, MITO Settembre Musica, ISCM World New Music Days, Wien Modern, Musikprotokoll, etc., and performed by ensembles and orchestras. and performed by ensembles and orchestras such as the Tonkünstler Orchester, Athens State Orchestra, Orchestre National d’Île-de-France, Orchestre de Jeunes de la Méditerranée, Ensemble Aleph, Klangforum Wien, Het Collectief, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Meitar Ensemble, Elias String Quartet, Ensemble Reconsil, Nomos Ensemble de Violoncelles, etc. His music has been championed by conductors such as Pierre-André Valade, Pablo Heras-Casado, Roland Freisitzer and Jean Deroyer.

Her works have been commissioned by Radio France, La Monnaie/De Munt, Musik der Jahrhuderte, Onassis Stegi, Pharos Arts Foundation, Code Modern and others. She has also been awarded composition prizes (Île-de-Créations 2013, France, for her symphonic work Intermède pour une mer jamais vue; Sibelius 2015, Finland, for her choral work De l’Âme; Prokofiev 2012, Russia, for her work Alma for viola and orchestra; Aldworth Philharmonic Orchestra Young Composer’s Award 2006-7, England).

Her music has been broadcast by BR Klassik, Ö1, CyBC, RAI3, ERT Trito and France Musique.

Christina also performs occasionally as a conductor. Equally at home with symphony orchestras and contemporary ensembles, she has collaborated with the Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto, Nederlands Symfonieorkest, Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, Manchester Camerata, London Sinfonietta, Moscow Contemporary Music Ensemble, DissonArt and others. She has conducted the world premieres of numerous works, including her own Quatre Silences with the Jyväskyla Sinfonia Finlandia at the Musiikin Aika festival (« comfortably, but intensely performed »), and her Votrys with the Tonkünstler Orchester Niederösterreich at the prestigious Grafenegg festival. In addition, she has collaborated with artists from other fields, notably choreographer Jamie Boylan (In Vein), while as director of her Ensemble Cyclamen, she has launched innovative interdisciplinary projects such as the cine-concert entitled « Re:Mains » with animator Charalambos Margaritis and, more recently, the touring photo-concert « Achroon-Aosmon » with eight photographers from Cyprus, Romania and Greece who based their contribution on her music.

She is frequently invited as a jury member for composition competitions (Italy, UK, Cyprus) and as a guest composer at institutions such as London College of Music, Royal Holloway, etc. to give seminars and workshops. Between 2012 and 18, she taught at the European University of Cyprus.

Born in 1981 in Cyprus, where she began her musical training as a pianist and flautist, Christina began composing at an early age. She graduated from London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama and went on to gain a PhD in composition at London’s Royal Holloway University. She also took composition courses at UNT, CNSMD Lyon, ΙEMA Frankfurt and IRCAM, and read Byzantine music. Her main composition teachers have been Julian Philips, Philippe Leroux and Michael Zev Gordon. She also took summer courses with Philippe Hurel, Unsuk Chin, Joshua Fineberg and others. At the same time, she studied conducting with Alan Hazeldine, Mark Shanahan, Peter Eötvös, Sian Edwards, Lothar Zagrosek and Jorma Panula, in various masterclasses throughout Europe.

Christina is a guest artist at ENOA. She has also been composer-in-residence at CAMAC, the Chapelle Musicale Reine Elisabeth in Belgium, and the Cité des Arts in Paris.
